Soil science is the study of soil as a natural resource on the surface of the Earth, encompassing soil formation, classification, mapping, and its physical, chemical, biological, and fertility properties. The earliest known soil classification system comes from China, appearing in the book Yu Gong (5th century BCE), dividing soil into three categories and nine classes based on color, texture, and hydrology. Contemporaries Friedrich Albert Fallou, the German founder of modern soil science, and Vasily Dokuchaev, the Russian founder, are both credited with identifying soil as a resource distinct from geology and crop production. Fallou had primacy in time, but Dokuchaev's work is considered more significant to modern soil theory. Previously, soil was considered a product of chemical transformations of rocks; Dokuchaev viewed soil as a natural body with its own genesis and history, formed by climate, vegetation, relief, and age.
